The biggest event in the Port Colborne Optimist calendar is the annual Canada Day celebrations at H.H. Knoll lakeview park.
Each year sees thousands of visitors enjoying live music at the bandshell, childrens entertrainers, food trucks galore, and dozens of craft vendors from around the region.
As well as some animal rides and bouncy castles there is face painting and last year saw the introduction of a ‘foam party’. That was so popular we aim to bring it back next year.
Entertainment usually begins at 10:00am, pausing for opening ceremonies around 13:00pm for delegations from service organizations and speeches. Ceremonies culminate in the singing of the Canadian national anthem. The whole park stands. It is quite a sight.
Various Optimist Club committees handle everything from booking the entertainment to organizing the vendors and food trucks. And of course the Penny Sale tent, one of the most popular features of the day. It is very rewarding to see it all come together.
We are always looking for new members and volunteers to assist. Join us! It’s fun! Take a look at the photos below to see just how much fun.
