Award Night 2025

On Wednesday May 28 2025 the Optimist Club held a special meeting, combining our Respect For Law and Youth Appreciation award ceremonies. Each of these reflects our gratitude for the community endeavours and civic spirit embodied by the recipients. Each recipient has demonstrated commitment, passion, and involvement in their local communities.

We made it a catered event, inviting award winners and guests to join us for a meal at the Lions Hall. Outgoing Lieutenant Governor Don Devreede was present to oversee the formalities.

Respect For Law

This award recognizes the value and importance of upholding the law, respect for the overall legal system, and commitment to community and local society. The winner of the award this year is Marsha Babion. Marsha has served the community for 25 years as a crossing guard, keeping children safe. Thank you, Marsha! Committee members Chris Eros and Claire Beauregard selected Marsha from the many possible candidates as 25 years of service should be celebrated.

Graham Priest Youth Appreciation Award

Graham Priest was a dedicated, honorary lifetime member of the Optimist Club that sadly passed last year. This award, named in his memory, honours local youth for their involvement in school and community life. We were pleased to present seven Youth Appreciation awards this year to the students listed below. Their schools are listed beside the students name. Awards were presented by committee members Karen Kettle and Claire Beauregard.

  • Ciara Whateley – St. Elizabeth
  • Emma Morden – Steele Street
  • Rose & Grace Tonnies – Mckay
  • Sophie Nuxoll – St. John Bosco
  • Victoria Burella – Marshville

The Port Colborne Optimist Club celebrates each of our award winners and is pleased to highlight their selfless contributions to our community. There are many other citizens deserving of awards like these. Most go quietly about their business as unassuming volunteers, just keeping things moving and doing their part where they can. Every one of our award winners, and all the unsung volunteers that keep our community going are heroes, in our eyes. Thank you all.
