The Port Colborne Optimist club recently became sponsors of the Wave, a girls hockey team based right here in Port Colborne. More about them here.
On February 16th at the Vale health centre, the Wave became a tsunami that overcame the Etobicoke Dolphins 5-0. The Dolphins played very well, but this was just not their day. Commiserations! The Wave swept through and go forward to the finals of the Frenzy tournament, scheduled tomorrow, Monday, Feb 17th.
On hand were Optimist member and Sponsorships & Media Relations Director of the Port Colborne Girls Hockey Association, Jessica Grabell. PC Optimist Club Secretary and Communications Director Carl Green was also there to represent the Optimist club, and take far too many photos of the event. See gallery below.
The Optimist Club had planned for more of us to attend and show support, however the weather firmly put paid to that. Today was a snow day, winter storms making many businesses leave their doors closed. Most people stayed home and hunkered down for the day. Not these teams! These girls (and their parents) braved the elements to travel here and between them put on a great game. That shows commitment! Teamwork teaches us to push through the hard times, deal with the highs of winning, and the lows of losing. All of these are good life lessons.
It is, they say, the taking part that matters. Though it might not feel like it on the day. The life lessons found in team sports will last these players a lifetime.
The Frenzy finals are at the Vale tomorrow afternoon. The event is free to enter, and games begin at 8:30 with the actual final at noon, so come on down. We encourage anyone interested to join us to watch the fun.
